Limewash Painting in Nashville, TN
What Limewash Paint Is — and Why Nashville Homeowners Are Choosing It
Limewash is one of the oldest wall finishes in the world. Made from slaked lime mixed with water and pigment, it creates a matte, semi-translucent surface that looks completely different from standard latex paint. The finish has depth — light interacts with it differently at different angles and times of day, giving walls a warm, textured, almost hand-applied quality that no roller and bucket of latex can replicate.
It's been gaining serious traction in Nashville interiors over the last few years — in living rooms, primary bedrooms, dining rooms, and brick fireplaces. Homeowners who want something beyond flat or eggshell are asking about it constantly, and for good reason. When it's applied correctly, it transforms a room in a way that's genuinely hard to describe until you see it.

Our Product Standard: Meoded Limewash
We use Meoded limewash products exclusively on every project. Our team has completed Meoded's professional training and certification — this isn't a product we picked up at a paint store and started applying. We know how it behaves, what it needs to bond correctly, and how to get consistent results across large wall surfaces.
Every limewash project starts with Meoded Quartz Primer. On fresh or previously painted drywall, Quartz Primer creates the surface profile the topcoat needs to adhere and develop its texture properly. On previously painted surfaces, it bridges the existing finish so the limewash has something to bite into. Skipping it — or substituting a generic primer — changes how the product behaves and shows in the finished result. It's not optional on our jobs.
The Meoded system is designed to work together. Substituting pieces of it produces unpredictable results. That's one reason we don't recommend DIY limewash projects to homeowners using hardware-store materials — the outcome is rarely what they saw on Instagram.
Where Limewash Works Best
Interior accent walls
The most common use we see in Nashville is a single limewashed accent wall — living room, primary bedroom, or dining room. The variegated finish gives the wall visual presence without competing with furniture or art. Strong choice when the rest of the room is relatively neutral.
Brick fireplaces and surrounds
Limewash on brick is exceptional. The product soaks into the porous surface and creates a soft, whitened effect that still lets brick texture show through. Nashville homes with 1960s–1980s red brick fireplaces that feel dated are natural candidates. Dramatic update without touching the structure.
Full-room applications
All four walls — maybe the ceiling — in a room with natural light and good architectural bones. Most effective in spaces with high ceilings or strong natural light. Newer open-concept builds that feel flat can gain real dimension from a full-room limewash treatment.
Exterior masonry
Traditional lime-based limewash is a historically accurate exterior finish for brick and concrete block. It's breathable — better for masonry long-term than film-forming paints. A niche application, but worth knowing about if your home has unpainted brick exterior.
Where Limewash Doesn't Work
Limewash is not a universal paint replacement. Some surfaces and situations are the wrong fit:
- Kitchens and bathrooms — High moisture and frequent scrubbing wear down limewash faster than standard satin or semi-gloss paint. It can work in a dry, well-ventilated kitchen as an accent, but we'd steer you away from it near stoves or showers.
- High-gloss or vinyl surfaces without prep — Limewash won't bond to slick surfaces without sanding and priming first. Skipping prep on these surfaces is the fastest way to a failed finish.
- High-traffic rooms — If you have kids or pets who contact the walls regularly, a standard eggshell or satin is more practical. Limewash is best suited to lower-traffic spaces.
The Application Process
Limewash is applied in multiple passes using a cross-hatch brush technique — not rolled, not sprayed. Each pass builds the finish's characteristic variation and depth. Managing wet edges, knowing when to add water to the product mid-wall, and keeping transitions seamless between sections: these are skills that come from practice and proper training, not a first attempt.
A wall that's been applied unevenly or patched incorrectly is noticeable — the whole appeal of limewash is its intentional, controlled variation, not accidental blotching from inconsistent technique. Our team follows the application methods specified in Meoded's professional training on every job.
Here's what to expect on a typical project:
- Surface assessment — we evaluate the wall condition and confirm primer needs
- Surface prep — patch, sand, clean, and apply Meoded Quartz Primer
- First limewash coat — full cross-hatch application; working in sections to keep edges live
- Second coat and toning — builds depth and ensures even coverage across the full surface
- Final walkthrough — you inspect before we call it done
Most single-wall limewash projects complete in a full day. Full-room applications or surfaces requiring significant prep may run into a second day. We'll be specific about timing in your quote.
